Garner # 48   04/04/15

ANSWER: Margaret Polk is the only correct answer even though connected with the (The Memphis Belle) <note from Jimmy- Now, the ONLY correct answer will be MARGARET POLK, and NOT the Memphis Belle!  I just got though reading eight essays from Lausanne School in the Memphis Belle Essay Contest.  I was the General Manager of Mud Island in 1987 when we did all that work for the Memphis Belle restoration – even met Hugh Downs for national TV exposure, as well as eight of the nine living crew members of the Memphis Belle.  The flyover included the “bombing” of Mud Island with roses!  I could talk forever about this experience in Memphis!>

Question: I am the person who inspired the name of one of the most famous airplanes in aviation history. Who am I?

Hint: I was the subject of the most famous “romance” of the World War 2 era.

Hint: I lived in Memphis for most of my life – in Midtown!

Hint: I am a descendant of the 11th President of the United States.

Final Hint: I was known as “The Memphis Belle”

Answer: Margaret Polk. The aircraft was the namesake of pilot Robert K. Morgan’s sweetheart, Margaret Polk, a resident of Memphis, Tennessee. Morgan originally intended to call the B-17, Little One, after his pet name for her, but after Morgan and his copilot, Jim Verinis, saw the movie Lady for a Night, in which the leading character owns a riverboat named the Memphis Belle, he proposed that name to his crew.

After the war, the Memphis Belle was saved from reclamation at Altus Air Force Base, Oklahoma where she had been consigned since 1 August 1945, by the efforts of the mayor of Memphis, Walter Chandler, and the city bought the B-17 for $350. She was flown to Memphis in July 1946 and stored until the summer of 1949 when she was placed on display at the National Guard armory near the city’s fairgrounds. She sat out-of-doors into the 1980s, slowly deteriorating due to weather and vandalism. Efforts by the locally-organized Memphis Belle Memorial Association, Inc. (MBMA) saw the aircraft moved to Mud Island in the Mississippi River in 1987 for display in a new pavilion with large tarp cover. Capt. Morgan and Margaret were reunited again, along with eight of the nine living crew members, on May 17, 1987 as over 10,000 Memphians enjoyed the pavilion dedication, which included a flyover of seven of the eleven flyable B-17s remaining in the world!

In the summer of 2003 the Belle was disassembled and moved to a restoration facility at the former Naval Air Station Memphis in Millington, Tennessee for work. In September 2004, however, the National Museum of the United States Air Force, apparently tiring of the ups and downs of the city’s attempts to preserve the aircraft, indicated that they wanted her back for restoration and eventual display at the museum at Wright-Patterson AFB near Dayton, Ohio. The Belle arrived safely at the museum in mid-October 2005 and was placed in one of the Museum’s restoration hangars.

Last Week: Memphis & Charleston Railroad. Centuries ago, animals, then nomadic Native Americans, then European explorers all ventured along the high ridges in this area, later to be known as Memphis. Then the American settlers decided to lay claim in the latter part of the 18th century. In 1796, Tennessee became the third state to join the Union after the original thirteen colonies, as America expanded westward. The Louisiana Purchase of 1803 made Fort Adams here an important location for all explorers, both by land and by river. The town of Memphis was laid out in 1819. Memphis was developed as a steamboat town in the early part of the 19th century, and then the “iron horse” (railroad) began making tracks along the Southern countryside. In the middle of the 19th century, there was no national railway network, and most rail lines were “local” and about only 100 miles long.

The ambition of developers to connect the cotton industry in the Delta with the East Coast and European shipping markets became a reality in May, 1857, when the Memphis & Charleston Railroad was completed in May of that year. The big celebration entitled “Wedding of the Waters” is where water was brought from the Atlantic Ocean and sprayed into the Mississippi River, and water from the Mississippi River was taken and sprayed into the Atlantic Ocean! It could be said THAT was our first Memphis In May celebration!!!
